Internal medicine is a lot more involved in patient care than I thought. There's a lot of "you're the primary team, you take charge." And then the specialists really just pop in for a few days and give their opinion, at least this is all how it seems so far on the inpatient level.
There's a lot of social work involved, like making sure a patient has a place to go home to, managing transportation, and contacting family members of the patient, at least from the medical student through resident level.
Internal medicine also has a lot of time spent writing notes and looking things up and being in front of a computer, to my surprise. I'm pretty exhausted, I average probably 17-18.5 hour days 6 days a week. But my team's awesome, and I'm happy for that. I'll write more about the IM rotation as time goes by. It's heavy work but you learn so much.
