Baby on the Monitor

Today I assisted in a surgery involving a thoracotomy on a baby.  While the baby was being prepared for surgery, all I could think about is how small they were, and how new in the world they are.

The surgery was long, and the room was hot to keep the baby warm and the surgeons and everyone in the room doing their best to resist the temperature.

After, the overhead camera was still on, with the spotlights on the baby.  The area around the baby was completely dark when projected on the monitors, and the baby sleeping in the spotlight.  It made an image I won't forget, there's nothing else like it.

When the baby was going to be transported back, I held their hand for a little bit.  It was more like me putting my fingertip in the palm of their hand and giving it a good luck squeeze.  I wished them the best of luck, a new little person in a world so new to them.

  1. Thank you! It has actually been so long since I've looked at my blog, so this causes a lot of memories to flood back. I'm so tired these days, but thinking back on this really replenishes the fulfillment I had lost over time.
