When to Take Step 2

Hey readers.

I have a bit of time write now to put together a few helpful entries.  If you ask people when to take Step 2, you'll get different answers because everyone has a different schedule of rotations.

The best time is when you're on electives and don't have to study for shelf exams.  Schedule Step 2 CS several months before you take it, and schedule Step 2 CK more months in advance just in case you have to fly out somewhere.  Step 2 CK spots can be pretty limited and you don't want to get caught in a tight spot.

This is where it gets tricky:

Some residency programs want Step 2 CK and CS scores before you apply to them.  I only saw one program that wanted that, but you might come across more than me.  What was more common in my application season was that they wanted Step 2 CK for help in ranking applicants.

I studied for almost 2 months on a busy rotation, and was happy with both my rotation grade and Step 2 CK score.  It's all about time management.

I recommend taking Step 2 CK in the summer of your senior medical school year or in August so you can have a Step 2 CK score ready prior to the submission of your residency application.

Be sure to check deadlines on residency program websites, and if  you still have questions, it's no problem to contact someone.
