Seizing the Day as a Medical Student

Hey readers, welcome to one of my usual nocturnal posts.

The biggest thing on my mind lately is how to really get the most out of life.  This has really ramped up from the days I would sit and think about what I could be doing to really live life to the fullest, because ever since medical school started, I probably have around 10% the free time I used to.

So much of my time now is spent studying, preparing for new challenges, and keeping up with medical knowledge I'll need.  I play music, have photography as another hobby and keep fit, and I find myself with a lot less time for those, though I still make it work.  I feel like so much life passes you by as a medical student, and that there is a lot of pressure and high expectations to meet, but you do get to touch lives and help people recover and become well.

But this lack of free time has made me become more proactive, passionate, and maybe actually just crazy about living my life to the fullest.  It's been quite a transformation from the time before medical school.  I rarely sleep in now, and I guess it's a strange new "balance system": I'm so used to being sleep deprived that I'd rather be tired and have a lot of free time to enjoy things than be better rested and have it be late in the day.

The thing is, when it's break time between blocks, my body takes advantage of the slightest amount of nap time and turns it into a short hibernation.  Which is good, because I can't be on 100% all the time.

What's kind of funny now is that since I've spent a little over a year in an intense lifestyle, I refer to my body as some kind of separate sentient entity.  It's just this thing/force that takes over and needs so much care and attention.  I think I look at it that way because I have to force myself to stay awake, to work harder, to focus more, and you kind of become distant from your physical needs I guess.

Anyway, I'm happy and things are great and I have a weekend to just run around and have an awesome time.  Thank you all very much for reading!
