Just had to pop in since I just saw an ad on this. We learned in class as MS-1s that cutting out a food group or something of that sort doesn't work in the long run. Also, why would you deprive yourself of a food group to begin with? I mean, I can understand if you're vegetarian yea, but I'm talking about people who go on weird juice diets or things like that. (this entry is written with the person of average health in mind, not a diabetic patient or patient with a complicated disease).
We've all got different metabolic demands and genetic predispositions for certain things, but really, if you can manage your serving size and lift weights and exercise, you're good. Don't go around blowing money on exotic banafofanarama seed extracts from a mysterious fictional high-altitude jungle, none of that stuff is FDA approved and I have no idea what the effectiveness of stuff like that is.
Our body, in short, takes quite a bit of programming to run right. That's to say, you can run a couple of days and lose a little weight, but your metabolism hasn't been re-programmed. It takes a long time of running and exercise to reprogram your metabolism, and then you have to maintain it. It's like building a ship right? Go through all the assembly, then keep it maintained so it doesn't sink.
That's why it takes so long for people to see changes in their body upon starting a workout regimen. Your body just has to adapt to these new demands, and ever quite so beautifully and elegantly, it builds new blood vessels, muscles become larger and more toned, your heart has to work less hard in a resting state, and everyone will like be like "zomg uR sew handsome/bewtiful."
But really, the long-lasting results come from eating healthy and exercising, not in supplements. You can supplement your life away but you're missing out on the benefits of improving your physiology through exercise. Heck, I run because I feel that I'm doing my bones a disservice from only cycling!
And hit up those free-weights too! Have a healthy and fun summer!
