There was a time I was rebellious in medical school. Most of it came from being the new guy in a time crunch, with high expectations from an attending, and not enough time in the day to do all the patient care I needed, when an intern told me to go buy lunch for them. With my own money.
I told them, "Yea, as soon as I'm done writing my note." Time passed, and then another intern offered me some cash to go buy them both their lunch.
It's not respectful to make someone sacrifice their time to go do something you're too lazy to do on your own. You're a grown adult, and a doctor on top of that. Wake up earlier, budget your time, and go get your own lunch. Being a medical student means a lot of people don't value your time and they treat you worse than ancillary staff they don't respect.
Stand up for yourself and value your time, or no one else will. I hate getting interrupted when I'm paying thousands of dollars for an education to go run errand for some entitled person who has never held a job in their life before intern year.
I don't let myself get pushed around, and you shouldn't either. It's the only way you'll get respect in this field.
Stand your ground. There is no excuse for things like that. The ones who do that are the ones who are going to suck at being doctors, and they'll be the prima donnas that give doctors a bad name. The patients will figure it out.
ReplyDeleteI despise hearing of things like this. Treat your own kind with respect. When patients hear in the news about other doctors who dump on "their own kind", we have to wonder about the profession and who you let in.
I'm sorry about this. Very happy that you did it.
