Anesthesia or Surgery Saga. Part I

Hey team.  Again, like many medical students I've come to a point where I do more and more soul searching and hope to find what truly makes me happy.

Lately I've been thinking about exploring anesthesia again, since the more I spend in surgery, the more I miss the physiology and pharmacology behind things.

I think the research could be pretty interesting, probably more so on the applied research side or clinical research.

I'm also a bit tired of my life being run by bowel. The GI tract is interesting and all, but it doesn't think per se. I also think I'm becoming more interested in cerebral perfusion and intensive care.

A resident told me the other day that I need, to love the things you see all tbe time, like lap choles and hernias in general surgery for example.  I'm not sure how fulfilling the belly is for me, even though I think bowel is less gross-looking now.

A while ago on my surgery rotation I would see the same anesthesiologists go consent patients when I'd go pre op check others.  I wanted to just go up to them and introduce myself and say "Can I just follow you guys and see what you do?"

I might just try it for real this time.

My advice to you is to interact with as many people in the field that interests you, and read about research topics in different journals.  If you're academically inclined like me, that's particularly important.

Looks like I'm thrown in again into career indecision, but at least I know I'm made for the OR.
