I used to be fascinated by the nervous system and dedicated a couple of years studying it in laboratories.
I was interested in the pathophysiology of stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and how the brain can re-wire.
The more time I spent in clinical neurology the more of the beauty and fragility of the nervous system I saw, and I saw more of the relentlessness of autoimmune neurological disease, especially in children.
I saw stroke survivors gradually regain their independence, I saw the ominous onset of Parkinson's disease, I interviewed patients with dementia and spent every second hoping I could do something to help them regain their former selves.
I took care of children and infants who had hemorrhagic strokes in the womb, children with intractable epilepsy, and listened to every mother's story of their selfless and trying journey alongside their child.
For some people, neurology is their life. For people like me, I feel like there is so much I want to do for patients, but so little medical science can help me accomplish at this point in time.
When choosing careers in medicine, find your passion in the organ system, and the clinical aspects.
