first real day of surgery rotation

Since I started surgery rotation yesterday (a lot of orientation), I've been really excited.  I've actually been trying to contain my enthusiasm so it doesn't overwhelm anyone, hah.

Today I observed two cases, then scrubbed in on one case where I got to pilot the laparoscopic camera.  I was nervous ever since I found out I was going to be assigned to the camera since I've never done it before, but I actually did pretty well and felt good that the surgeons I worked with helped me re-position the camera when a new step of the surgery was being done.  Having grown up on video games helped me quite a bit, to be honest.

The trick to the camera is to keep your grip but also relax your hands and shoulders, because you can get really tight in those areas and also start a low grade tremor and start getting tired.

I like how fast and efficient rounds are on surgery, though with the OR, I'm still learning to be comfortable.  I'm thankful for how nice everyone's been to me on my first two days, because regardless of how a rotation turns out, the first couple of days, especially the first one,  stay in your memory.

In short, I'm having a great time on surgery so far, and happy to be working with a great team.

That's great. People you are working with are indeed one of the greatest factor of satisfaction in a job or in your case your surgery rotation. :)

  2. Definitely, one of the highlights is working with people who are willing to teach and who see so much potential in you.

Some people go out of their way to help you with the littlest things, I won't forget the scrub nurse who saved my first scrub-in in history from being a complete failure, haha.
