Let's Talk Music

I thought I'd take some breaks from medical school topics to talk about something a little more fun and different.

Anyway, I just discovered that the song from the Honda Crossover commercial is called Pata Pata performed by Miriam Makeba.  I particularly like the tune for the piano hook and Miriam's vocals.  I also am a big fan of samba and Brazilian music, so this Afro-Caribbean feel of the track by the South African artist was a big hit with me, hah.

Anyway, if you're interested in Brazilian artists, I'd recommend Marcio Faraco, Zuco 103, and Cansei de Ser Sexy.  Marcio Faraco is more like Brazilian folk-jazz and I love the track "Ciranda."  Zuco 103 is more modern, electronic "Brazilectro" while Cansei de Ser Sexy is more like indie-electronic-rock stuff, and they're pretty fun.  Portuguese is a phenomenal language, and it's right up there with French, Russian, and Catalan.

Lately I've been listening to a lot of the Mountain Goats which is really just one guy, John Darnielle, this guy with great lyrics.  I recommend "This Year," and "Color in Your Cheeks."  He's I guess what you'd call an indie singer-songwriter, and his lyrics are very poetic, funny, honest, and refreshing.  He released his first album on a tape; he recorded it on a boom box and just made copies that way.  That's pretty inspiring.

Aside from the Mountain Goats, I've been exploring more electronic music like Cut Copy (reminds me of Depeche Mode + house + 90s electronic), Calvin Harris (a Scottish electronic music DJ), and Lonely Island's hilarious "Incredibad" album.

Other music I like that you might like too: Daft Punk, the Clash, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, the Cure, Morrissey, VHS or BETA, David Bowie, Cafe Tacuba, Broken Social Scene, Interpol (their old stuff), Bon Iver, Stars, the Stills, the Starlight Mints, Tego Calderon, and the Jam.

I'm predominantly into British rock and music from Scandinavian countries.  I guess when you're at those latitudes of the world, making music inside is an awesome idea in crazy cold weather.

Anyway, I thought it'd be funny and entertaining to hear what songs you guys in medical school/residency/practice listen to to get excited/pumped for surgery and tough days.  I like Andrew WK, Young Jeezy, and Rick Ross to get me pumped for big things, which is probably hilarious if you know what I look like haha.

You guys have an awesome weekend.
